ABOUT
ZYPREXA
Zyprexa is an anti-psychotic drug
prescribed for patients suffering from
schizophrenia, and other psychological
disorders, as well as elderly people
with dementia. However, patients taking
Zyprexa are at an increased risk for
dangerous side effects, including
diabetes, hyperglycemia, pancreatitis
and tardive dyskinesia, a condition
marked by slow, rhythmical, involuntary
movements. There have also been several
reported cases of Neuroleptic Malignant
Syndrome (NMS), a potentially fatal
symptom.
Zyprexa is Eli Lilly's brand of the
anti-psychotic drug olanzapine.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
has approved Zyprexa to treat symptoms
of schizophrenia that may include
hearing voices, seeing things, or
sensing things that are not there,
mistaken beliefs or unusual
suspiciousness.
Zyprexa may be used alone or with
lithium or divalproex to treat acute
manic episodes in adults who have a
condition called Bipolar I disorder.
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness
that causes extreme mood swings.
Schizophrenia, a disorder of the brain,
affects about 1 out of 100 persons -
with onset usually in young adults.
About 20 to 40 percent of patients with
schizophrenia and schizoaffective
disorder attempt suicide. Suicidal
behavior refers to actions by a patient
that put the patient at risk for death.
In April 2005 the FDA issued an alert
noting that older patients treated for
dementia with Zyprexa or other atypical
antipsychotics had a higher chance for
death than patients who did not take
the medicine.
Eli Lilly recently announced it will
pay more than $690 million to patients
who have suffered serious Zyprexa side
effects. In addition, Eli Lilly has
received reports of medication
dispensing or prescribing errors
between Zyprexa and an antihistamine
drug, leading to various medical
problems or potential relapse in
patients suffering from schizophrenia
or bipolar disorder.
