VIOXX Side
Affects
Many Vioxx patients were unaware that
the risk for side effects such as heart
attacks is nearly four times greater
with Vioxx than with traditional pain
relievers.
Vioxx side effects, including heart
attacks, were discussed in a report
recently released by the Cleveland
Clinic. The Vioxx side effects were
compared to those of patients treated
with standard nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), with
Vioxx side effects relating to heart
attacks appearing far more often than
in non- users of Vioxx.
In September 2004, this drug was
recalled by the manufacturer after
studies showed the following dangerous
Vioxx side effects:
-
A higher risk of heart attacks, strokes
and other cardiovascular and
cerebrovascular problems.
-
Stomach ulcers that bleed. The chance
of this serious problem increases the
longer you take Vioxx, but it can also
happen suddenly.
-
Liver damage. Some of the warning signs
of liver damage are nausea, vomiting,
tiredness, loss of appetite, itching,
yellow coloring of skin or eyes,
"flu-like" symptoms and dark urine.
-
A recent report from the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) notes that
Vioxx and other non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
medicines can cause other serious
problems such as:
-
Kidney problems that include sudden
kidney failure or worsening of current
kidney problems.
-
Fluid retention and swelling. Fluid
retention can be a serious problem if
you have high blood pressure or heart
failure.
