SEROQUEL Side
Affects
Seroquel is an anti-psychotic drug
prescribed for patients suffering from
schizophrenia, and other psychological
disorders. However, patients taking
Seroquel are at an increased risk for
dangerous side effects, including fatal
heatstroke, and tardive dyskinesia, a
condition marked by slow, rhythmical,
involuntary movements. There have also
been several reported cases of
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), a
potentially fatal symptom. Other
studies show Seroquel causes cataracts
in animals.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) in April 2005 issued an alert
noting that older patients treated for
dementia with Seroquel or other
atypical antipsychotics had a higher
chance for death than patients who did
not take the medicine.
Other Seroquel side effects may be
life-threatening, according to the FDA.
They include:
-
Agranulocytosis, a potentially
life-threatening reaction where the
body's bone marrow does not produce
enough white blood cells.
-
Seizures. The risk of seizure is
increased in people who have a history
of seizures or other predisposing
factors.
-
Heart problems. Clozapine can cause a
condition called myocarditis, or
swelling of the heart muscle.
-
Lowering of blood pressure when you
stand up. This may also lead to
fainting. In rare instances, this has
been associated with lung and/or heart
collapse.
-
A life-threatening nervous system
problem called neuroleptic malignant
syndrome (NMS). NMS can cause a high
fever, stiff muscles, sweating, a fast
or irregular heart beat, change in
blood pressure, and confusion. NMS can
affect your kidneys.
NMS is a medical emergency. Call your
healthcare professional right away if
you experience these symptoms.
-
A movement problem called tardive
dyskinesia (TD) when a person's muscles
that cannot be stopped.
-
High blood sugar and diabetes. Patients
with diabetes or who have a higher
chance for diabetes should have their
blood sugar checked often.
Other serious side effects may include
low blood pressure seen as dizziness,
increased heart beat and possibly
fainting, cataracts, seizures, low
thyroid, elevated cholesterol or
triglycerides, liver problems,
persistent erection, increase or
decrease in body temperature, and
difficulty swallowing.
