ABOUT RISPERDAL

Risperdal is the Johnson & Johnson brand of the drug risperidon. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Risperdal to treat schizophrenia, and other behavioral and psychological disorders.

Schizophrenia, a disorder of the brain, affects about 1 out of 100 persons - with onset usually in young adults. About 20 to 40 percent of patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder attempt suicide. Suicidal behavior refers to actions by a patient that put the patient at risk for death.

In April 2005 the FDA issued an alert noting that older patients treated with Risperdal or other atypical antipsychotics had a higher chance for death than patients who did not take the medicine.
